ACSS/AW (Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported - All-Weather)

Is a type of electrical conductor commonly used in overhead power lines. It is designed to operate continuously at elevated temperatures up to 250°C without loss of strength; it sags less under emergency electrical loadings than ACSR/AW; it is self-damping if prestretched during installation; and its final sags are not affected by long term creep of aluminum.

Key Features of ACSS-AW:
  • Construction: ACSS/AW conductors consist of a core of steel wires surrounded by layers of aluminum. The steel core provides high tensile strength, allowing for longer spans and reduced sag, while the aluminum provides good electrical conductivity
  • Temperature Resistance: ACSS/AW conductors are designed to operate effectively in high-temperature environments. They can carry more current at elevated temperatures without significant loss of performance, making them suitable for areas with high ambient temperatures
  • Applications: They are typically used in power transmission and distribution networks, particularly in regions where extreme weather conditions can affect conventional conductors
  • Regulatory Standards: ACSS/AW conductors must meet specific industry standards for safety and performance, such as those set by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
