EQUIPMENT

Thermal welding of overlaps

Electric hot air welding equipment, such as manual hot air welding equipment and pressure rollers or automatic hot air welding machines with a controlled hot air temperature of at least 600 ° C (1112 °F). Recommended equipment type:

  • Manual: Leister Triac
  • Automata: Leister Varimat or similar
  • Semi-automatic: Leister Triac Drive
SUPPORT QUALITY

The surface of the substrate must be even, smooth and free of sharp projections or burrs, etc. Sikaplan® G-12 must be separated from any incompatible substrates/materials by an effective separation layer to prevent accelerated ageing. The substrate must be membrane compatible, solvent resistant, clean, dry and free from dust and grease. Metal surfaces must be degreased with Sika® Trocal Cleaner-2000 before applying the adhesive.

APPLICATION

Application procedure

Reference should be made to other documents as appropriate such as the relevant application procedure, application manual and installation or work instructions.

Fastening method - General

The waterproofing membrane is installed by loose laying (without stretching or tensioning it) with mechanical fixing at the overlap between the membranes or intermediate fixings. The overlaps are heat-welded using special equipment with hot air.

Fixing method - Point fixing

Sikaplan® G-12 must always be installed perpendicular to the folds of the sheet. Sikaplan® G-12 is fixed with fasteners and plates/tubes along the marked line, 10 mm (0.394 in) from the edge of the membrane. Sikaplan® G-12 overlaps 100 mm (3.94 in). The distance between fasteners is in accordance with Sika's project-specific calculations. At attics and penetrations, the membrane must be fixed with fasteners and additional plates/tubes. Fasteners and plates/tubes protect the Sikaplan® G-12 membrane against tearing and peeling caused by wind uplift.

Thermowelding method

Overlapping edges must be welded with electric hot air welding equipment. Welding parameters, including temperature, machine speed, air flow, pressure and welding machine settings must be evaluated, adapted and checked on site according to the type of equipment and climatic conditions, before starting heat welding.

Welding testing

Welds should be mechanically tested with a screwdriver (rounded edges) to ensure weld integrity / completion. Any imperfections must be repaired by hot air welding.
